The Foundation Of Marriage Skip to main content

In 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, Paul tells us that there is only one sure foundation that we can build our lives on: “According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” If our lives our meant to be founded on Jesus Christ, than certainly our marriages should rooted in Him as well!

God created marriage at the very beginning of His plan for humanity. He is so passionate about marriage and gave it an important place throughout the Bible. The Scriptures begin with a marriage: “It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helper fit for him” Genesis 2:18. Throughout the entire Bible, we see God honored in strong marriages (Abraham and Sarah, Ruth and Boaz, Mary and Joseph). While none of these couples were perfect, they strived for strong marriages where they honored and served God together. Finally, God’s Word ends with the most important wedding: the marriage of Christ to His imperfect but redeemed bride, the church, “the wife of the Lamb” Revelation 21:9.

What is God’s plan for a union between two imperfect people? He created marriage with something far more wonderful in mind than simply a way to get our needs met. He designed marriage to accomplish a very important goal: to help us become more like His Son, Jesus Christ.

A great marriage is the outcome of becoming Christlike. You may ask, “How do we know if we are becoming like Jesus?” The good news is that Christ Himself gives us the answer in John 13:34-35: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” The evidence of you both becoming Christlike is your ability to love each other as Christ loves you.

God’s goal for your marriage is not your happiness. That will surely come, as you submit to God’s purpose for your marriage. He wants so much more than just happiness for you! He wants joy, fulfillment, strength, and a compelling love to blossom in you and your spouse. In other words, He wants to use your marriage to help you and others become more like His Son!

Here at Reverent Wedding Films, we love capturing and highlighting the beginnings of these Christ-like marriages! You can see some beautiful examples in our portfolio!
